It was disconcerting. The idea was to get an insight of her career strides in movies. But getting more than an inkling of her bharatanatyam skills and the passion for the art gave a different tone to her personality.

From the tag of a jinxed actress (in Tamil) to get that red-carpeted welcome, Asin’s determination and the perseverance to brave the odds is a hardcore lesson.

Ullam Ketkumae ran into financial hassles and she had to pay a price for the inordinate delay of the release. Adding to Asin’s woes, Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam (with Suriya) got stalled. The doors of Mahalakshmi welcomed her by way of M Kumaran S/o Mahalakshmi and no looking back for the one who had initially aspired to be a model.
Not many are in the know of Asin’s management skills, willingly taking an active role in her father’s business. Even to date her father Joseph wonders as to what would have lay in store for his only daughter if she had plunged neck deep. When destiny lay its head, Asin’s debut film in Malayalam happened. Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka fell in between success and average. Quick in that shuffling act, Asin smelled instant success in her Telugu opener Amma Nana O Tamil Ammai.

Five hits, back-to-back, with brand names like Nagarjuna, Balakrishna, Venkatesh and Ravi Teja, gave Asin an enviable status. Like a mother watching her growing son snatched by a teenage girl, Malayalam industry could do no more than watch in awe. When the baby grows, where is the need to complain!

Hardly she is five movies to the good in Tamil but there is that settled look written all over her face. The screen charmer is a trained artiste in bharatanatyam and folk dance.

Some task it turned out to be catching up with Asin, busy shooting for Dasavatharam. Thrilled to the core in locking horns with Kamal Haasan, she was guarded to open up regarding the footage of her role. Is it a double delight, going by the reports that she is to sport two roles! With silence as her strong line of defence, Asin pleaded helplessness. Yes, the instructions has been clear from director K S Ravikumar that nothing ought to be divulged now.

Putting to rest the speculations and the prospects of an unparalleled hit, Asin said Gajini has a special place in her heart. ‘That Kalpana is more like me, bubbly, caring, affectionate and above all human. Fell in love with that character the moment director Murugadoss detailed the storyline. So much life in that character, rolled to a nicety when packaged.’

Of the chemistry with Suriya, Asin said she is at home with all heroes. ‘Everyone is special to me as every actor has his own ways and style. It is a question of adaptability and in tune with the script.’

In hero-centric flicks, where does she find the scope to leave her mark. ‘You do not need extensive footage to hold audience approval. For me, the script, character, banner, director and hero (in that order) is of paramount importance. No hassles to be paired with a newcomer, if the storyline demands so.’

Particular to dub her own lines (save for Ullam Ketkume), Asin said it has helped her to understand the medium in quick time. ‘You have to get that from the bottom of the heart for fulfillment. Mouthing some imaginary lines and making a dash to the next set is not my way of viewing the job as a profession. When you enjoy the work there is no need to put in that act.’ In recent times, Aalwar could be deemed as a rare failure. Pokkiri more than made amends, the movie enjoying a stupendous run both in Tamilnadu and Kerala.

Much water has flowed under the bridge since the Malabar girl announced her arrival in M Kumaran S/o Mahalakshmi. Though she made her debut in a Malayalam film, she is more at home in Tamil films.

Drawing a deep pause, Asin said she is still to decide on her next venture after Dasavatharam. Such is her commitment that it is always one thing at a time. It’s time for a foray in Hindi for the deceptive talent. Should the magic with Aamir work in the remake of Gajini, it will be Bollywood’s gain.
